Deadly Landfill Collapse in Cebu Buries Dozens as Rescue Efforts Continue

Rescue teams in central Philippines continued risky search operations on Saturday for dozens of workers buried under massive piles of garbage after a huge landfill collapsed in the city of Cebu, killing several people and shocking the nation.

The Payatas landfill, a privately operated facility serving Cebu City and surrounding areas, collapsed on Thursday when a mountain of waste estimated to be as high as a 20-story building gave way, crushing structures used to house and accommodate sanitation workers.

Authorities said around 50 workers were buried beneath the debris. At least six bodies have been recovered so far, while dozens remain missing, as rescue teams struggle with unstable conditions and the risk of further collapses.
