Venezuela began releasing Americans held in its prisons on Tuesday, a U.S. official said, praising the move by the interim leadership in Caracas following Washington’s ouster of President Nicolas Maduro.
“We welcome the release of Americans detained in Venezuela. It is an important step in the right direction by the interim authorities,” a State Department official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The official did not provide further details about the releases or specify how many detainees were freed, noting only that more than one American was involved.
The official also said that the social media platform X has become accessible again in Venezuela after being blocked for more than a year under Maduro, who remains in custody.
