Five-Year Sentence for Former South Korean President Over Martial Law Attempt

A Seoul Central District Court sentenced former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to five years in prison after convicting him in the first of eight cases tied to his declaration of martial law on December 3, 2024.

Yoon was accused of attempting to lead a rebellion and obstructing arrest procedures during the political crisis.

Prosecutors had previously requested the death penalty, citing his attempt to impose military rule under the pretext of countering a “North Korean threat.”

Parliament later convened an emergency session to revoke the martial law decree before officially removing Yoon from office on December 14, 2024.
