Macron Says Greenland Tensions with U.S. Are a Wake-Up Call for Europe

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday that recent tensions with the United States over Greenland represent “a wake-up call for Europe as a whole,” urging greater European strategic awareness.

Speaking alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Macron said the wake-up call should focus on “asserting European sovereignty, strengthening contributions to security in the Arctic region, combating foreign interference and disinformation, and addressing climate change.”

Macron reaffirmed France’s “solidarity” with Denmark and Greenland, which is under Danish sovereignty, and stressed his country’s “commitment to their sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

His remarks come amid growing international interest in the Arctic, as geopolitical competition intensifies and European concerns mount over external influence in the region.
