Venezuela’s Parliament Passes Amnesty Law for Political Prisoners Amid Tensions with U.S.

Venezuela’s parliament unanimously approved an amnesty law on Thursday allowing for the release of political prisoners, less than two months after the United States arrested President Nicolas Maduro.

Interim President Delcy Rodriguez signed the law, which excludes from amnesty anyone who “encouraged” armed actions against Venezuela.

The provision could affect several opposition figures, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Machado, who supported a U.S. military operation in January.

The law is to be applied retroactively to events dating back to 1999, including the attempted coup against late President Hugo Chavez, the 2002 oil strike and unrest in 2024 following Maduro’s re-election.

There was no immediate comment from Washington or opposition leaders on the new legislation.
