Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said on Wednesday that the Strait of Hormuz was under the country’s “full control” after Tehran announced a ban on maritime passage through the strategic waterway.
Mohammad Akbarzadeh, deputy commander of the Guards’ naval forces, told Iran’s Fars news agency that oil, commercial and fishing vessels could no longer pass through the strait following Iranian warnings to global shipping.
He said Iran had informed international maritime traffic that the Strait of Hormuz was under “war conditions,” warning that ships could be damaged by missiles or drones and advising them not to transit the area.
Akbarzadeh added that more than ten oil tankers that ignored the warnings had been targeted with various munitions and sustained damage.
There was no immediate comment from international maritime authorities or the U.S. Navy on the claim.
