The US State Department said on Friday it approved a $151.8 million weapons sale to Israel that includes munitions and technical support, without submitting the deal to Congress for review.
The department said Secretary of State Marco Rubio determined that an emergency situation required the immediate completion of the sale, one week after the United States and Israel began their attacks on Iran.
In a statement, the department said Israel requested the purchase of 12,000 BLU-110 A/B multipurpose bombs, each weighing 1,000 pounds.
It added that Repkon, a US-based contractor headquartered in Texas, will be the principal contractor for the deal.
The State Department said Rubio determined that the sale “is in the national security interest of the United States.”
Democratic Representative Gregory Meeks said Rubio’s decision to invoke emergency authority to bypass congressional review shows that the war against Iran was not properly prepared.
