India Allows Iranian Warship to Dock in Kochi on Humanitarian Grounds

Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said on Saturday that India allowed an Iranian warship to dock at one of its ports on humanitarian grounds after the United States sank another Iranian naval vessel off nearby Sri Lanka.

A source in the Indian government told Reuters that the Iranian vessel Lavan docked at the southern port of Kochi on Wednesday following an urgent request from Tehran.

The docking took place on the same day a US submarine struck the Iranian frigate Dena off the coast of Sri Lanka, according to the source.

The US Naval Institute News website reported that Lavan is an amphibious landing ship.

US President Donald Trump has previously said that destroying Iran’s navy is one of the objectives of the war launched a week ago by the United States and Israel against Iran.

Speaking at the annual Raisina Dialogue, Jaishankar said that the ship Lavan and two other vessels had been heading for a fleet review before somehow becoming drawn into the conflict.

“I think we handled the situation from a humanitarian perspective, regardless of the legal issues… I believe we did the right thing,” he said.
