Venezuela’s Acting President Urges Trump to Lift US Sanctions

Venezuela’s acting president Delcy Rodríguez on Friday urged US President Donald Trump to lift American sanctions that she said are harming people, during a ceremony in Caracas welcoming a delegation of Colombian ministers.

Rodríguez spoke a day after canceling a planned trip to Colombia for security reasons, saying that “unilateral coercive measures against the Venezuelan people affect the peoples of Latin America.”

She added that the sanctions also impact Colombia’s and Venezuela’s economies and the well-being of their populations.

The United States imposed oil sanctions and other restrictions on Venezuela in 2019 following the 2018 presidential election in which President Nicolás Maduro ran while the opposition boycotted the vote.

After Maduro’s arrest in January, Washington eased some sanctions, and analysts believe they could be fully lifted in the near future.
