Japan’s Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said the government currently has no plans to deploy Japan Self-Defense Forces to the Strait of Hormuz.
The remarks were reported Monday by Japan’s Kyodo News Agency.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said during a parliamentary session that the government is reviewing steps to ensure the safety of ships linked to Japan in the Middle East.
Asked whether Japan would send vessels to the region at the request of the United States, Takaichi said no formal request has been received from Washington so far.
She added that she could not respond to “hypothetical questions.”
The statements come after US President Donald Trump warned NATO members and US allies that they could face a “very bad future” if they fail to help secure navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
