The U.S. government announced early Sunday that it had successfully rescued an American pilot who had been trapped behind enemy lines after his F-15 fighter jet was shot down inside Iran, as the war entered its sixth week.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt posted a statement from President Donald Trump on X, in which he said the U.S. military had carried out “one of the boldest search and rescue operations in the history of the United States” in recent hours.
Trump added that the pilot, identified as a colonel, was injured but “will make a full recovery.”
The rescued pilot was the second crew member of an F-15 jet that Iran said its air defenses had shot down on Friday. Reuters had earlier reported that one crew member had been rescued, while search operations continued for others by both U.S. and Iranian forces.
In a related development, Iranian officials had called on citizens to help locate the American pilot, while Trump has signaled potential escalation in the coming days, including possible strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure.
