FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed that Iran will take part in the 2026 World Cup despite the ongoing war, emphasizing the importance of the team’s participation.
Speaking at the “Invest in America” forum hosted by CNBC, Infantino said the Iranian team “will definitely come,” expressing hope that conditions will be safer by the time the tournament begins.
“Iran must come. They represent their people, they have qualified, and the players want to play,” he added, stressing that sport should not be tied to politics.
Infantino also referenced his recent visit to the Iranian team in Antalya, Turkey, describing them as “calm and a good team that wants to play.”
He concluded by highlighting football’s role in “building and maintaining bridges,” despite ongoing political challenges.
The 2026 World Cup will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
