Authorities in Florida have launched a criminal investigation to determine whether artificial intelligence played a role in a mass shooting at a state university.
The probe follows prosecutors’ review of conversations between the chatbot ChatGPT and the suspected gunman involved in last year’s attack at Florida State University, according to Attorney General James Uthmeier.
Uthmeier said, “If ChatGPT were a person, it would face murder charges,” highlighting concerns over the nature of the interactions.
He noted that Florida law allows anyone who assists or advises in the commission of a crime to be treated as an accomplice, carrying the same legal responsibility as the perpetrator.
Investigations are ongoing to assess the potential involvement of advanced technologies in the incident.
