Cuba’s minister of energy and mines said Wednesday that the country has completely run out of diesel and fuel oil reserves as Havana faces its worst wave of recurring blackouts in decades.
Energy Minister Vicente de la O said through state media that Cuba has “no fuel at all and no diesel at all,” adding that the national power grid is in a “critical” condition and that the country has “no reserves.”
The crisis comes as Havana says the longstanding US embargo has severely restricted fuel supplies reaching the island.
A Reuters witness reported scattered protests in several neighborhoods of the capital, where hundreds of residents banged pots and pans in protest against repeated power outages despite a heavy police presence.
Cuba has been grappling with a worsening energy crisis in recent months, significantly affecting daily life and essential services across the country.
