Boko Haram Militants Kill 33 Fishermen and Woodcutters in Northeastern Nigeria

Militants from Boko Haram have killed 33 fishermen and woodcutters in two separate attacks in Nigeria’s volatile Borno State in the northeast.

The attacks, which took place on Monday, left 27 fishermen dead in Mafa district and six woodcutters killed in Dikwa district, according to an anti-jihadist group and a local fishermen’s union official.

The anti-extremist group Babakura Kolo, which works alongside the military, said the attackers intercepted the fishermen on motorcycles about two kilometers from Mafa town and opened fire, killing all 27.

A local union official said the victims were returning from fishing in a dried-up pond when they were attacked.

In a separate incident, six woodcutters were shot dead while collecting firewood in a forest area near Malam Maja village in Dikwa district, according to the same sources.
