South Korean President Urges Trump to Lead Efforts for Peaceful Resolution with North Korea

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has asked U.S. President Donald Trump to take a leading role in pursuing a peaceful resolution to tensions with North Korea, according to the South Korean presidential office.

Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said the two leaders briefly spoke while posing for the official Group of Seven family photo, during which Trump asked about the current state of inter-Korean relations.

According to Seoul, Lee encouraged Trump to spearhead diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving issues with North Korea through peaceful means, citing the importance of dialogue and international engagement.

Kang said Trump responded that he would work toward addressing the North Korean issue and supporting efforts to reduce tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

During his first term, Trump held three meetings with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, including a historic summit in Singapore in 2018, a second summit in Hanoi in 2019, and a meeting later that year in the Demilitarized Zone, where he became the first sitting U.S. president to step into North Korea.
