U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that imposing transit fees on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz “cannot be a condition in any agreement” with Iran, arguing that the strait is part of international waters and no country has the right to charge vessels for passage.
Speaking at the Gulf Cooperation Council meeting in Manama on Thursday, Rubio highlighted the importance of the strategic partnership between the United States and Gulf states.
He noted that recent regional developments, including attacks linked to the conflict involving Iran, have put that partnership to an important test.
Rubio said Washington would continue working with GCC countries and other partners to reach an agreement with Tehran, stressing that any future deal must meet specific conditions, including guaranteeing freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring that Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons.
