A U.S. official said on Sunday that the United States and Iran have agreed to halt their reciprocal attacks, which had reignited tensions in the Gulf following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two countries.
The official stated that negotiations will continue on all issues covered by the memorandum, adding that both sides have agreed to suspend attacks for the time being, allowing commercial vessels to move freely through the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waters.
In recent days, Washington and Tehran accused each other of violating the ceasefire, escalating tensions after the memorandum was signed on June 17.
The U.S. official, however, did not confirm media reports suggesting that American and Iranian delegations are scheduled to meet in Qatar on Tuesday to discuss the Strait of Hormuz.
