Greece: More Than 1,300 Migrants Arrive in Crete and Gavdos Amid New Influx

The number of irregular migrants arriving on the Greek islands of Crete and Gavdos has exceeded 1,300 amid a new wave of arrivals, following the rescue of 152 migrants in three separate incidents south of the port of Kali Limenes.

The Greek Coast Guard reported that a drone operated by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) detected the three boats before rescue operations were conducted in coordination with the search and rescue center.

According to the reported estimates, 1,194 migrants had already arrived on Crete and Gavdos between October 19 and 21, having departed from the Libyan coast.

The number of arrivals has reportedly increased as weather conditions improve, placing additional pressure on migration reception and management services on the islands.
