At least 24 people were killed on Sunday in an explosion targeting a train carrying military personnel in Pakistan’s restive southwestern province of Balochistan, according to a senior local official.
The official said the attack took place in Quetta, the provincial capital, and also wounded more than 50 people, including Pakistani army soldiers.
Images circulating from the scene showed a heavily damaged train carriage lying on its side as rescuers and bystanders searched through the wreckage for survivors.
People were also seen carrying bloodied victims on stretchers away from the derailed carriage while heavily armed security forces secured the area.
Balochistan has long experienced instability and repeated attacks targeting security forces and infrastructure.
