Ukrainian local officials said a large-scale Russian overnight attack killed four people in Kyiv and surrounding areas as the capital came under heavy bombardment on Sunday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia struck the city of Bila Tserkva in the Kyiv region with an Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile as part of the overnight assault.
Ukraine’s air force stated that Russia launched 600 drones and 90 missiles during the attack, adding that one of the missiles was an intermediate-range ballistic missile, though its type was not initially identified.
Russia’s Defense Ministry later confirmed the use of Oreshnik nuclear-capable intermediate-range missiles alongside Iskander ballistic missiles, Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, Zircon cruise missiles, and drones.
Moscow said the strikes targeted military objectives only and described the operation as retaliation for what it called Ukrainian “terrorist attacks” against civilian infrastructure inside Russian territory.
