At Least 82 Killed in Coal Mine Explosion in Northern China

At least 82 people were killed following an explosion at a coal mine in China’s northern Shanxi province, according to updated figures released by state media.

The gas explosion occurred late Friday night at the Liuxin Yu coal mine in the Qingyuan area while 247 workers were underground, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported.

Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered intensive rescue efforts and called on authorities to spare no effort in treating the injured and searching for survivors.

He also demanded a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the accident and strict accountability in accordance with the law.

Premier Li Qiang echoed those instructions, urging officials to provide timely and accurate information while ensuring strict responsibility measures.

Local emergency authorities in Qingyuan said rescue operations are still ongoing as investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the disaster.
