Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou starred in the penalty shootout as Morocco defeated the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw following extra time on Tuesday in Monterrey, Mexico, to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals.

Bounou saved the Netherlands’ fifth penalty, taken by Crysencio Summerville, before Ismael Saibari converted the decisive spot kick to secure Morocco’s place in the next round.

Cody Gakpo had given the Dutch the lead in the 72nd minute, but Morocco equalized deep into stoppage time through a header from Issa Diop after sustained attacking pressure under coach Mohamed Ouahbi.

Morocco will face Canada on July 4 for a place in the semifinals.
