Egypt Reach the 2026 World Cup Quarterfinals for the First Time

Egypt made history by reaching the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time after defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time in their Round of 32 match on Friday in Arlington, near Dallas.

Egypt took an early lead through Emam Ashour, who scored with a header in the 13th minute. Australia equalized early in the second half thanks to an own goal by Mohamed Hany in the 55th minute.

The Pharaohs secured qualification in the penalty shootout, with substitute Hossam Abdelmaguid converting the decisive kick, while Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington missed for Australia.

It was Egypt’s first-ever victory in the knockout stage of a FIFA World Cup, in the nation’s fourth appearance after 1934, 1990, and 2018.
