Kremlin Confirms Continued Russian Presence in Mali to Support Counterterrorism Efforts

The Kremlin announced on Thursday that Russian forces will remain in Mali to support the military-led government in its fight against armed groups.

The statement was delivered by Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov following a surprise attack carried out by a group linked to Al-Qaeda in West Africa, alongside a separatist faction dominated by Tuareg fighters.

Peskov emphasized that Russia’s presence in Mali is based on a request from the current authorities, adding that Moscow will continue its efforts to combat extremism, terrorism, and other destabilizing threats in the country.

His remarks came in response to reports citing a statement allegedly issued by rebels expressing a desire for Russia to withdraw, claiming that the ruling military council may not endure without Russian backing.
