Croatia captain Luka Modrić has been included in the preliminary squad for the FIFA World Cup following facial surgery on his cheekbone, as the 40-year-old aims to compete in his fifth World Cup.
Coach Zlatko Dalić announced a provisional 33-man squad, with the final roster to be revealed on June 1 for the tournament hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.
Modrić is expected to recover in time to lead Croatia’s midfield, in what could be his final World Cup appearance.
The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner brings vast experience with 196 international caps and remains a key figure for Croatia.
Dalić said: “He is training while wearing a protective mask and doing well. We will assess his condition, but I have no doubts about him.”
Croatia will face a tough Group 12 alongside England, Ghana, and Panama.
