Spain and Morocco have dispatched emergency assistance to Portugal to help contain five major wildfires burning across different parts of the country.

Lisbon activated the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, while Spain deployed a military emergency unit, and Morocco provided aerial firefighting support with specialized aircraft.

The fires have burned more than 10,000 hectares of land, with over 3,000 firefighters involved in containment efforts amid an intense heatwave and strong winds that have pushed fire risk to extreme levels.
