UN Says Ongoing Israeli Violations in Gaza Have Created a Humanitarian Tragedy

The United Nations Human Rights Office in Palestine said on Friday, May 22, 2026, that ongoing Israeli violations in Gaza since the ceasefire agreement signed seven months ago have created a catastrophic humanitarian reality for civilians.

Office spokesperson Mai Al-Sheikh stated that more than 880 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces since the truce came into effect in October.

She added that what she described as war crimes in Gaza have not stopped, saying the ceasefire had effectively become a cover for continued killings. According to the office, around 180 civilians were recently killed in tents and streets as a result of air and naval bombardments.

The spokesperson also said the office documented ongoing Israeli airstrikes, including drone attacks as well as missile and naval shelling.

She warned of a worsening humanitarian disaster, citing a near-total paralysis in reconstruction efforts and accusing Israel of deliberately strangling the enclave by restricting food and medicine supplies and spreading fear among displaced families along Gaza’s coastline.

Al-Sheikh stressed that exposing Palestinians to such levels of violence is incompatible with the concept of a ceasefire, adding that displacement continues to affect the majority of Gaza’s population.
