US Proposal Suggests Replacing Iran with Italy at World Cup 2026

The Financial Times reported on Wednesday that a senior envoy to U.S. President Donald Trump proposed that FIFA replace Iran with Italy in the 2026 World Cup.

According to sources cited by the report, the proposal may also aim to repair relations between Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni following tensions over remarks related to the Pope and the war with Iran.

U.S. envoy Paolo Zampolli said he suggested the idea to Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, calling Italy’s participation “a dream,” given its four World Cup titles.

There was no immediate response from the White House, FIFA, or the Italian and Iranian football federations.

Italy failed to qualify for the tournament for the third consecutive time after losing in the European playoffs, while Iran reportedly stated it is ready to participate.

Reuters noted it could not independently verify the report.
