The World Health Organization announced Sunday that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda constitutes a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern,” warning of potential risks to neighboring countries.
The WHO stated that the outbreak linked to the Bundibugyo strain does not currently meet the threshold of a global pandemic, but countries sharing land borders with the Democratic Republic of Congo face a high risk of further spread.
In a statement, the organization said that 80 suspected Ebola-related deaths, eight laboratory-confirmed cases, and 246 suspected infections had been reported as of Saturday in Ituri province in eastern DR Congo.
The suspected cases were identified across at least three health zones: Bunia, Rwampara, and Mongwalu.
On Friday, the Congolese Ministry of Health had already announced 80 deaths linked to a new Ebola outbreak in Ituri.
