The World Health Organization has maintained its assessment of the hantavirus outbreak as “low risk,” as Canadian health authorities confirmed a Canadian passenger aboard the infected cruise ship MV Hondius tested positive for the virus.
In a statement released as the vessel approached the Dutch coast, the WHO said the latest available information indicates that the global public health risk remains low.
The organization noted that while additional infections among passengers and crew exposed before containment measures were implemented remain possible, the risk of further transmission is expected to decline after disembarkation and monitoring measures are enforced.
Officials said the MV Hondius is scheduled to dock Monday at the Dutch port of Rotterdam, where the remaining 27 people onboard — including 25 crew members and two medical staff members — will disembark.
Meanwhile, Britain is preparing to receive individuals who had contact with confirmed cases in order to place them under precautionary monitoring.
