More than 250 media organizations from around 70 countries joined a global campaign on Monday to denounce the killing of large numbers of Palestinian journalists in Gaza by Israeli forces. The initiative was spearheaded by the non-governmental groups Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and Avaaz.
The coordinated action included black ribbons on newspaper front pages, messages displayed on news websites, as well as editorials and opinion pieces.
A stark message reading, “At the rate at which the Israeli army is killing journalists in Gaza, soon no one will be left to report what is happening,” appeared on the front pages of publications such as L’Humanité in France, Público in Portugal, and La Libre in Belgium.
The campaign comes after Gaza’s government media office announced on Sunday that the death toll of journalists in the enclave had risen to 247 since October 7, 2023, following the killing of journalist Islam Abed in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza City.
