U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday the termination of U.S. financial aid to Colombia, accusing President Gustavo Petro of failing to curb drug production in the South American nation.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote: “From now on, there will be no payments or any form of assistance to Colombia,” without specifying which programs would be affected.
He further claimed that Petro “does nothing to stop” drug production, calling him “a drug lord who strongly encourages massive drug production” in his country.
Colombia is the largest recipient of U.S. aid in Latin America, receiving more than $740 million in 2023, according to U.S. government data. Roughly half of that funding was directed toward counter-narcotics programs, while the remainder supported humanitarian and food initiatives.
