Brazil’s northern city of Belém, located in the Amazon region, is preparing to host the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) from November 10 to 21, in what is expected to be a key summit for advancing global efforts to protect tropical forests and accelerate climate action.
Speaking on Friday during the second day of the World Leaders’ preparatory meetings, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said that “the planet can no longer sustain a development model driven by intensive fossil fuel consumption,” calling for a “just and urgent transition toward a low-carbon economy.”
On Thursday, Lula launched a new international fund aimed at safeguarding tropical forests, as part of Brazil’s broader push to position the Amazon at the center of global climate solutions ahead of COP30 in Belém.
