A winter storm bringing heavy snowfall led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights in New York and across the northeastern United States.

According to flight-tracking firm FlightAware, 1,659 flights were canceled nationwide on Friday, nearly ten times the number recorded on Thursday.

A winter storm warning remains in effect for the region through Saturday afternoon, with freezing rain also expected in some areas.
