The Arab League Secretariat has decided to hold an emergency meeting at the ambassadorial level on Sunday, December 28, 2025, to discuss the “seriousness of Israel’s recognition of Somaliland.”

The issue of the breakaway Somaliland region has returned to regional and international focus after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Friday a joint declaration of “mutual recognition” with the region’s leader, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, marking a new development in a matter that has spanned nearly three decades.

The joint declaration has been met with Arab, Islamic, and African rejection, emphasizing Somalia’s sovereignty and the unity and territorial integrity of the country.
