Lebanon PM Bans Hezbollah Military Activities Amid Escalation With Israel

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam on Monday banned Hezbollah’s military and security activities, declaring them illegal and limiting the group’s role to political activity.

Salam stressed that no military or security operations should be launched from Lebanese territory outside state institutions, calling on security agencies to prevent any attacks originating from Lebanon.

The move came as Israel carried out intensive airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs and areas in southern and eastern Lebanon on Monday, killing 10 people, according to Lebanese official reports.

The Israeli military said the strikes were in response to rocket fire launched by Hezbollah toward the southern outskirts of the northern Israeli city of Haifa.

Lebanon’s presidency and government rejected Hezbollah’s rocket launches and said they would not allow the country to be dragged into a new war.
