A major explosion at an oil refinery near the coast of Texas on Monday sent thick plumes of smoke into the air and prompted nearby residents to remain indoors, officials said.
Port Arthur Mayor Charlotte Moses said no injuries were reported following the blast at the Valero refinery, located about 145 kilometers east of Houston.
Authorities advised residents in parts of the city’s west side to stay inside as a precaution, while firefighting crews responded to the scene.
“There was an explosion, but we’re okay… everyone is fine. They are working to put out the fire as quickly as possible,” Moses said.
The incident comes as fuel prices rise amid uncertainty over global oil supplies linked to the ongoing war involving Iran.
The refinery employs about 770 workers and has a processing capacity of around 435,000 barrels per day, refining heavy sour crude into gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.
