FIFA Approves Dismissal of Players Who Cover Their Mouths During Confrontations

FIFA has approved a rule amendment allowing referees to send off any player who covers their mouth during a confrontation with an opponent, in a move aimed at curbing racist abuse on the pitch.

The decision follows a controversial incident in the UEFA Champions League in which Vinícius Júnior alleged he was subjected to racist abuse.

The rule will be implemented during the 2026 World Cup, granting referees discretionary authority to assess situations, thereby enhancing transparency and discipline in competitions.
