The cruise ship “MV Hondius,” where a hantavirus outbreak was detected, arrived early Sunday at the Spanish island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, as authorities began evacuating more than 100 passengers and crew members.
The Dutch-flagged vessel docked at the Spanish port of Granadilla accompanied by a civil guard ship, according to vessel tracking service “VesselFinder” and journalists on site.
Three passengers — a Dutch couple and a German woman — died during the outbreak, while several others were infected with the rare disease, which is commonly spread through rodents.
Medical tests confirmed that the infected individuals contracted the Andes virus, the only known strain of hantavirus capable of human-to-human transmission, raising international health concerns and prompting strict precautionary measures.
