Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud officially announced the implementation of the country’s new constitution in a move expected to reshape Somalia’s political and electoral system.
The president explained that the constitutional amendments include the direct election of the president by the people instead of parliament, while extending the presidential term to five years.
The amendments also stipulate reducing the clan-based quota system and limiting national political participation to three political parties.
The move comes as part of efforts to finalize the provisional constitution adopted in 2012 and strengthen political stability in the country.
