The Democratic Republic of Congo’s health minister said new estimates indicate that 131 people have died from Ebola among 513 suspected cases.
The announcement came as the World Health Organization declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
Until Sunday, reports had indicated 88 deaths and around 300 suspected cases in DR Congo, in addition to one death and one suspected case in Uganda.
The WHO confirmed that Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus determined that the outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola constitutes an international health emergency, although it does not meet the criteria for a global pandemic.
The organization said the declaration aims to place neighboring countries on high alert and mobilize international support to contain the outbreak.
