The Tunisian Journalists’ Union on Thursday called on Parliament to expedite amendments to Decree 54, which concerns cybercrime and information systems offenses, arguing that it has increasingly been used to prosecute journalists and individuals expressing critical opinions.
The union pointed to several prison sentences issued in cases linked to critical social media posts, including that of journalist Khawla Boukrim.
Enacted in 2022, the decree has sparked ongoing debate between authorities and advocates of freedom of expression.
