France, the Netherlands, and Belgium recorded at least 3,700 excess deaths during an exceptional heatwave that swept across Western Europe in June, with the toll expected to rise as data continues to be updated.
France reported more than 2,000 excess deaths in a single week, while the Netherlands recorded 480 and Belgium 1,222.
The heatwave also fueled wildfires and placed severe pressure on healthcare systems and energy infrastructure, marking one of the continent’s most extreme climate events.
