Clashes broke out between police and demonstrators in Lyon on Saturday during protests against rising living costs and worsening educational conditions.
France deployed approximately 70,000 police officers and gendarmes nationwide. The Interior Ministry reported around 15,000 protesters and 27 arrests by 2 p.m., describing the overall situation as “generally calm.”
Demonstrations also took place in Paris, Marseille, Toulouse and Nantes.
A student union called for school and university closures on the following Tuesday and Thursday to demand improved learning conditions.
The demonstrations followed violence, looting and the burning of public buildings during unrest two weeks earlier.
