Albania: Opposition Lawmakers Disrupt Parliamentary Session With Smoke Bombs

Lawmakers from Albania’s opposition Democratic Party disrupted a parliamentary session on Thursday by setting off smoke bombs, blocking the podium and displaying photographs of protesters they claimed had been injured by police during demonstrations demanding Prime Minister Edi Rama’s resignation.

The disruption occurred during discussions on legislation concerning the country’s central bank, while members of the ruling Socialist Party continued voting despite the protests inside the chamber.

Parliament removed four opposition lawmakers from the hall.

Opposition representatives accused police of using excessive force against demonstrators, although the photographs presented do not independently establish the allegations.

The confrontation followed similar disturbances in Albania’s parliament on October 22.
