The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency said Thursday it had received a report of a vessel being seized off the coast of the United Arab Emirates by unidentified individuals before being taken toward Iranian territorial waters near the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the agency, the incident occurred about 38 nautical miles northeast of Fujairah while the vessel was anchored.
The agency stated that the ship “was boarded by unauthorized individuals” and is currently being directed toward Iranian territorial waters.
No further details were released regarding the identity of the vessel or the group responsible for the operation.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region and around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes.
