Since President Donald Trump returned to the White House on January 20, 2025, debate has intensified over the future of the transatlantic alliance. Rather than signaling NATO’s decline, recent developments suggest the alliance is redefining the balance of responsibilities between the United States and its European allies.
For more than seven decades, the U.S. security umbrella has served as the cornerstone of Europe’s defense. However, shifting geopolitical priorities and growing strategic competition with China have led Washington to press European allies to assume a greater share of defense responsibilities.
Although Trump has voiced these demands more forcefully, the policy predates his return, reflecting a broader U.S. strategic shift toward the Indo-Pacific region and its focus on addressing China’s growing influence.
