North Korea has commissioned a new 500-ton destroyer, describing it as a symbol of the country’s growing naval and nuclear capabilities, state media reported on Wednesday.
During a launch ceremony held at the western port of Nampo, leader Kim Jong Un said the new warship reflects steady progress in the plan to arm the navy with nuclear weapons.
According to the Korean Central News Agency, the vessel, named Choe Hyon, has officially entered service and will be tasked with defending the country’s western coastline.
The agency added that the destroyer is equipped with multiple weapon systems, including anti-air and anti-ship capabilities, as well as ballistic and cruise missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
Since its unveiling in April 2025, Kim has presented the ship as a major step toward expanding operational reach and enhancing preemptive strike capabilities.
