Libya’s Zawiya Oil Refining Company declared a state of emergency and completely shut down the refinery after shells landed inside the facility during clashes near the city west of Tripoli.
The company confirmed the evacuation of oil tankers from the port to ensure the safety of workers, facilities, and the surrounding environment.
The Zawiya refinery is Libya’s largest operational refining facility, with a production capacity of 120,000 barrels per day, and is connected to the strategic Sharara oil field.
The party responsible for the clashes has not yet been identified, while the Zawiya Security Directorate announced a broad security operation to track down those involved.
